Meet Our Trainers: Steve

We think the trainers at Next Phase Studio are pretty awesome—and we want you to get to know them too! As both a personal trainer and Director of Fitness, Steve Evans Jr. brings a lot of personal training experience to the table at our Bethesda location. Steve has been part of our team since December of 2017 and has a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from the University of Maryland. He is also a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA-CSCS). Recently, Steve earned his USA weightlifting level one and two certifications and is set to compete in his first competition this April—go Steve!

We decided to sit down and chat with Steve to get to know him better.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

“I am an Army brat, so I never stayed in one area for too long while growing up. I have lived in North Carolina, California, Kentucky, and Maryland.”

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BE A PERSONAL TRAINER?

“I have always had an interest in teaching. After deciding to explore different career paths outside of the military, I got introduced to the Fitness Director at the University of Maryland, and the rest is history.”

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE MEAL?

“I love my mom’s chicken adobo.”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE EXERCISE?

“Barbell snatch.”

WHAT'S ONE THING YOU WISH EVERYONE WHO SIGNED UP WITH A PERSONAL TRAINER KNEW ABOUT THE PROCESS?

“You don’t have to be at a certain fitness level to personal train. We meet you where you are and custom craft a program that addresses your individual needs.”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE FROM A TV SHOW/BOOK OR MOVIE?

“Finish Him!” - Mortal Kombat

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY WITH A CLIENT?

“One of my clients has been training with me for a little over a year and came to me with a shoulder injury from CrossFit. His injury left him unable to exercise for over three years, and he was looking to get back on track. Fast forward to this month, his shoulder has recovered, he has lost significant body fat while adding muscle, and has managed to set multiple strength personal records. He’s always a joy to train!”

WHERE IS YOUR HAPPY PLACE?

“My happy place is when I see the effort I’ve given something come to fruition in a meaningful way.”
