Sonja Lyth

As the co-owner/studio manager of Next Phase Arlington, Sonja is thrilled to help spread health and happiness to the Arlington community. A Hawaii girl at heart, she lived on Oahu for a decade where she received a degree in Kinesiology and first founded her fitness business. Passionate about reaching more people, she took the plunge and re-established in the DMV. She’s a certified NASM personal trainer, Balanced Body Pilates instructor, and IIN nutritional Health Coach. With over 10 years of experience, Sonja’s style of training bridges the gap between Pilates and functional training techniques. She believes the key to results is variety, and can’t wait to share these fun, unique fusions classes at NP Arlington!

Alan Gulledge

Here’s some cool things about Alan: His experience in fitness ranges from being a top-50 world ranked pole vaulter, to a multiple-time Iron-distance triathlete, to managing 30 personal trainers at a top fitness franchise. Here’s something even cooler: Inspired to help others become more healthy, Alan walked away from a successful sales career in 2011 to follow his passion and become a full-time personal trainer and endurance coach. He is a NASM certified personal trainer and NASM certified Fitness Nutrition Specialist, and is a Certified Level 1 coach for both USA Triathlon and USA Track and Field. His forte is functional strength training and core engagement. His style was initially developed for endurance athletes but it for everyone who wants a tight mid-section. A native of Alexandria, Alan has lived in California and Utah, and returned to his roots six years ago. He has a psychology undergrad and an MBA. When not training clients and teaching at Next Phase, you might see him out flying by you on the running trail or speeding past your car on his bike!

Emily Schmidt

She started as a gymnast, but once Emily’s tall genes kicked in she turned to diving. Luckily, those gymnastics skills translated well; so well that she was recruited to UNC, where she was top 10 All ACC. We like to think she probably would have qualified for the Olympics if she didn't have a couple injuries to deal with; though then she would be a world famous diver instead of here with us! On top of years of exercise experience, Emily is a 200 hr RYT, TRX qualified, and is starting to become versed in Reformer. She likes to do handstands at random times throughout the day, but Emily's most impressive skill is making you like her, even after she's kicked your butt.

Maggie Donnelly

A professional actress in the DC Area, Maggie’s introduction to the fitness stage was by accident. Her 10+ years of ballet experience led her to help out a barre teacher who needed a last-minute sub. This quick decision turned out to be a total game changer as Maggie was instantly hooked on the rewarding experience of getting a group of strangers to laugh, scream and work on changing their bodies together. She has since added Pilates, Yoga and BOSU to the mix. Come check out why her students always leave her challenging classes with a smile on their faces, and don’t be surprised when you see her on stage at a theater near you.

Abe Cruz

Both a personal trainer and group instructor, Abe specializes in Circuit Training, High Intensity Interval Training, and Mixed Martial Arts Conditioning. He brings his versatility and motivating instructing style (along with his awesome playlists) to every class he instructs. A proponent of healthy living, Abe is also the type to enjoy helping people, so fitness instruction couldn’t be a more natural fit. That’s not all! Abe is also a professional stage actor and TV commercial actor, so while seeing him on TV is pretty cool, seeing him live while in his class is a whole lot cooler. After his class you can even get his autograph, though you may be too busy wiping off the sweat.

Kelly Niland

When Kelly first started practicing Pilates, within a few months some pretty significant things occurred: she discovered muscles she didn’t know existed; she began to find the flexibility she craved; and most importantly, she discovered what having a strong core actually meant. Now hooked for life, it’s no surprise that Kelly would later become an instructor in order to share this love with others. That’s lucky for us, as a passionate instructor, whose impetus is to help others the way it’s helped her, is the best kind. Kelly thrives to provide a fun and welcoming environment to encourage clients of all fitness levels to reach their personal fitness goals. Fun fact- if you see a girl hula hooping in the park, there’s a decent chance that’s Kelly!

Kim Barbano

A disciple of Sonja’s inspiring teaching style, Kim was immediately hooked after her first TRX class with Sonja. Kim then started personal training with Sonja to get in shape before her wedding, and both their personalities and work-out preferences vibed perfectly. A former high school varsity swimmer and volleyball player, Kim has coached youth swimming and volleyball and has always had a passion for health and fitness. A PR savant by day and fitness enthusiast by night, Kim is excited to spread Sonja’s effective methods after years of training under her. Kim lives in Courthouse with her husband, so if you don’t see her at Next Phase, you’ll likely run into her at the Farmer’s Market….buying only healthy things of course!

Lane Fahy

Lane fell in love with group fitness in college, where she learned that the sense of community in group classes pushes individuals to work harder than they would if they were working out alone. Since then, she's spent eight fun and energetic years teaching everything from water aerobics to HIIT and spinning! Lane believes the power of community to push individual accomplishment to the next level is essential. She's so excited about group ex, she's even researching exercise and mental health as she pursues her doctorate in Clinical Psychology! Her fav quote? "You’re only one workout away from a better mood!" Here at NP, we couldn't agree more.
